The Start Button How to remove the "Favorites" Menu from the start menu on
Windows 98
To get rid of the Favorites menu, just type "regedit" into the run box, and
then navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Then add a new Binary Value to this key, called "NoFavoritesMenu", and give
it the value "01,00,00,00" (you won't see the commas appear in the dialog, but
the numbers will, with a space automatically inserted between them).
On a restart you should now find that the Favorites menu has vanished!
Please be careful when editing the registry - if make a mistake you could stop windows
booting ;-)
How to edit the contents of the Start Menu
Just click right button on the start button, and then click on "Open"
You can then move the shortcuts around to your hearts content.
With Windows 98 however you don't have to do this, as you can move shortcuts between
menus by just dragging them. Also you can choose what order the icons appear in, and this
information is stored in the registry.
How do you move the start button :-)
- Press Control-Escape
- Then Press Escape
- Then press Alt-Minus (-)
- Then press the down arrow and select move
- You will then be able to move the start button with the left and right keys, and when
you are done press enter.
(This process of moving the Start button is not permanent)
How to get the Control Panel as a slide of part of the
Start Menu
|
To do this, you have to do the following:
- Click right button on the start button and choose Open.
- Create a new directory in the window that comes up and call it this:
Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-
1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
(This is all one string)
Then when you press enter it's icon will magically become the same
as the Control Panel.

You can use the same method to get other slide off options such as
this, and here are the directory names you will require:
Printers.{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}
Dial Up Networking.{992CFFA0-F557-101A-88EC-00DD010CCC48}
Recycle Bin.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
Here are some other names that should work, however I have been
unsuccessful with them so far (So if you get them get them to work, I would not mind
hearing from you!):
Inbox.{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
Network Neighbourhood.{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}
Desktop.{00021400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
My Computer.{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} |
